Public Service dispute latest

19-06-07

The public service trade unions on 20 June 2007 in Centurion have resolved to call on the state to create a conducive environment so that the parties can continue bargaining. They agreed that there is anger amongst members, so caution needs to be exercised.

Unions welcome the efforts in the mediation process to add to the current package, but it falls short of the unions' demands.

The unions call upon the state to stop acts of serious intimidation against the leadership of the unions such as POPCRU where the SAPS is calling for terms of imprisonment and heavy fines on union leaders, and also attacks and arrests of members, as at Kimberley, Sterkfontein hospital and other places.

The unions are still consulting their membership and will return to the Bargaining Council on Friday 22 June.
