COSATU condemns PSL/Supersport deal
The Congress of South African Trade Unions is appalled and angry at the reported deal between the Professional Soccer League and SuperSport. It will give the Pay-TV Channel the exclusive right to broadcast PSL Soccer matches to only a small elite of rich TV viewers, while depriving millions of the working class and the poor the opportunity to watch their favourite sport. The deal, announced by PSL chairperson, after months of legal battles, will be worth over R1 billion over five years. Yet again making money has triumphed over serving the people. Soccer is the sport of the people, and must therefore be made as accessible as possible to all its fans.
We shall be requesting a meeting with the PSL to discuss ways to ensure that the sport is not moved away from the working class and the poor.
We are pleased that the SABC is taking further legal action to reverse the decision and we will give our full support to the public broadcaster, which in this case clearly is the voice of the people.
