Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions
Solidarity Message

The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) would like to express its solidarity and support to the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) as thousands of South African public workers continue on strike.

The striking workers have put forward genuine demands and the South African government should, as a matter of urgency, award the workers the 10 percent rise they are demanding. A quick resolution to the strike will help alleviate a major disaster as most hospitals and schools have reportedly closed down.

School children are losing valuable time by not attending lessons hence the authorities should expeditiously look into the workers' demands. Experience has also taught us that if health personnel go on strike lives that could have been saved are unnecessarily lost.

The ZCTU deplores the deployment of the uniformed forces to deal with the strikers. Already some workers have been wounded in scuffles with the police.

A delay by the government in dealing with this matter will be insensitive and hideous as these workers' demands are just, they want to earn a living wage.
