COSATU NORTH-WEST PRESS STATEMENT

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) today called for solidarity support and total shutdown of all public institutions. COSATU North-West confirms that the schools, Gerona building (Provincial Administration Offices) as well as hospitals such as Rustenburg, Zeerust, Manikin, Lichtenberg, Brits, Potchefstroom and Schweizer-Reneke came to a standstill.

The federation condemns the attitude of the North-West provincial government of instructing police to provoke the workers using rubber bullets when workers had their peaceful demonstrations.

Demonstrations will continue until the 13th June 2007 when workers will be having a national strike. In the North-West workers will be marching from Mafikeng Rugby Stadium to the legislature and workers are determined to sleep over until their demands are met.

We call upon the President of the country to intervene as soon possible
