Urgent media alert
COSATU condemns police violence in Nelspruit
The Congress of South African Trade Unions has just received a
report that police have opened fire on striking public sector
union members who were protesting at the Riverside Government
Complex in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga. Three workers have been injured
and two arrested. COSATU sends its best wish to the injured for
a full recovery and demands the immediate release of those arrested.
We call upon the police and government offcials to stop this
kind of dangerous conduct. COSATU has repeatedly called for the
strike to be peaceful, disciplined and legal. We demand that
the employers and the state give the same assurance and immediately
desist from provocative actions like this.
