COSATU condemns the assassination of the Deputy Mayor of Govan Mbeki Municipality, Cde Thandi Mtsweni

02 JULY 2007

The Congress of South African Trade Unions in Mpumalanga vehemently condemns the brutal killing of Cde Thandi Mtsweni on the eve of the ANC National Policy Conference.

The killing, in terms of its timing and execution, is the product of professional work, a well-planned cold-blooded murder no different from the brutal and cold-blooded murder of Comrade Chris Hani perpetrated by the apartheid regime on the eve of the first democratic elections in the country.

The perpetrators of this ghastly did have robbed us of a Comrade, a selfless leader, a patriot, a revolutionary, a cadre of the movement who spent her entire life struggling to improve the lives of her people for the better. She was a martyr who dedicated her life to the liberation of her people and posed a mortal threat to the apartheid regime. She is amongst the few women of this country who was forced into exile and engaged in an armed struggle against the apartheid regime. She never retreated, she kept on fighting until the apartheid regime retreated and collapsed.

We extend our heart-felt condolences to her family, to the children, the Govan Mbeki municipality, the ANC in the Province, the alliance and the broader mass democratic movement.

We are confident that the law enforcement urgency will work around the clock to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book and they face the might of the law.
