Absorption of workers in Tribal Authorities into the Public Service

The Congress of South African Trade Unions is disappointed by the failure of the Office of the Premier to respond to its requests for a meeting to discuss the absorption of workers in tribal authority offices. These workers are employed in the administration and other auxiliary services at the tribal authority offices in the Province.

Currently, these workers many of whom have been employed for a long time are given anything between R214 and R714 per month as stipends. COSATU is of the view that this situation is completely unacceptable and needs to be addressed. COSATU have noted that the Premier in his state of the Province address mentioned the fact that government wants to strengthen the administrative capacity of the tribal authorities. However, we are concerned that the plight of workers who have served the communities over so many years is ignored in favour of advertising the posts for all and sundry to apply.

We are currently in a process of consultation with the workers to determine the course of action that needs to be taken to pursue our demand to have them absorbed into the public service.
