60 Detained at Chirundu on Way to SADC Summit

It has come to our attention that police at Chirundu Boarder post detained 60 human rights activists including a delegation from the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions. The activists were on their way to the Lusaka SADC Summit.

The police have seized campaign material that includes posters, T-shirts, fliers etc. Some activists were stripped of T-shirts they were wearing as the police considered them 'offensive.'

The latest information is that 20 of the 60 have managed to cross into Zambia but 40 are still being interrogated by the police.

It seems the government is employing one of its dirty tactics in trying to gag the human rights activists. Various progrsmmes had been lined up by trade unions, churches and trade unions in highlighting the Zimbabwe situation at the SADC.
