Stay Away Update

Dear Colleagues,

Thank you for the support and solidarity.

Things are progressing quite well. Most workers have heeded the call for the stay away. In the morning there were a few isolated shops that were open in the Central Business District. But as the day progressed more also opened. We have it on good authority that shop owners were directed to open their businesses or face unspecified action.

A survey in the industrial areas were most workers are concentrated revealed that most companies had a very low turnout of staff. In other areas like Mutare, the stay away has really been successful. Reports indicate that government hired buses to ferry people to work but most ignored government's gesture and did not turn up for work.

Workers on farms also heeded the call for a stay away and this indicates a major score for farm workers because most now work for the "new farmers" in the form of government officials.

We are still recieving reports from our people on the ground and we will keep you updated.

Regards,
