COSATU supports Sun International strikers

Sun International workers belonging to the SA Commercial, Catering and Allied Workers Union (SACCAWU) are still on strike in support of a wage claim.

Last week the FIFA 2010 World Cup Local Organising Committee respected the SACCAWU picket line and abandoned the Sun International Sun City venue they had previously booked for the event.

This move in solidarity with some of South Africa's worst-paid workers was widely appreciated in the entire country, far beyond the ranks of the organised working-class movement.

It has now come to COSATU's attention that promoter T. Musicman has booked Sun International's Carnival City venue in Brakpan for a concert on October 29th and 31st.

We call upon these and other organisers to cancel all Sun International bookings and to find other places to hold their events until the wage dispute with SACCAWU members has been satisfactorily settled. If they should fail to do that, then COSATU would urge the fans to give all such concerts a miss.

To the overseas artists (Eddie and Gerald Levert) booked for Carnival City COSATU would say: Your art is supported by workers, and workers everywhere have the same problems, even in the USA. Please respect worker solidarity!

COSATU would remind patrons of venues like Sun City and Carnival City: Your gratuities are not enough for these workers - they need a living wage. Now is the time to make a real and lasting difference in the lives of the people who must serve so patiently day in and day out.
