Dan Mohapi

The Congress of South African Trade Unions mourns the tragic passing of Comrade Dan Mohapi, and dips its flags in honour of a dedicated revolutionary fighter. He passed away on Tuesday 28 February, after a brave battle with illness.

Dan was a devoted servant of the workers and the national liberation struggle. He played a leading role in all three components of the Tripartite Alliance - the ANC, COSATU and the SACP.

He was first involved in the political struggle in the 1970s, when he was at Sekano Ntoane School in Soweto. When he started work, he was drawn into the trade union movement which was emerging strongly after the mighty 1973 strike wave. At times when he had no job, he set about organising the unemployed workers and was eventually elected as General Secretary of the National Unemployed Workers Coordinating Committee (NUWCC), which was linked to the new giant federation - COSATU.

In 1990 he was elected as Southern Transvaal Regional Secretary of the Construction and Allied Workers Union (CAWU), now part of the National Union of Mineworkers. In 1993 he was appointed as the COSATU Witwatersrand Regional Educator and then, in 1996, elected as the COSATU Witwatersrand Regional Secretary, which also qualified him to sit on the Central Executive Committee.

Then in 1999 he was elected as an ANC member of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature. He served as Chairperson of the Economic Affairs Portfolio Committee and then, after being re-elected in 2004, as a Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Public Transport, Roads and Works, a post which he held to the end of his life.

He also served as the South African Communist Party's Gauteng Provincial Deputy Secretary, and was a good friend of the Workers Library and Museum in Newtown.

Comrade Dan will be sorely missed by his many comrades and friends in the unions, the party and the ANC. COSATU sends its deepest condolences to his family, friends and comrades. Hamba Kahle Comrade Dan!
