Rob Amato

The Congress of South African Trade Unions is deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Rob Amato, columnist for the Sunday Independent, in a car accident on Saturday 22 July. We send our condolences to his family and colleagues.

His last assignment was to attend the COSATU Gauteng Provincial Congress in Springs. Two days earlier he attended the launch of the book, Trade Unions and Democracy, based on interviews with COSATU members. This was the subject of his last Separation of Powers column on Sunday 23 July. Like all his Sunday Independent columns, it was clear, thoughtful and profound. His analyses of important legal and constitutional issues were always well researched and well written, full of great insight. He will be greatly missed.
