COSATU welcomes bail decision in laundry murder case
The Congress of South African Trade Unions Gauteng Province welcomes the decision to refuse bail to those accused of the gruesome murder of three dry-cleaning workers in Vereeniging.
COSATU is alarmed at the growing evidence that labour disputes are likely to have been the motive for the killings, in particular, the allegation in the Sunday Times and City Press by a former worker at the laundry, Isabel Mayekana, that she was forced at gunpoint to resign "or die", after she accidentally burned a duvet.
Laundry workers interviewed by the Sunday Times said management "hated" Jocelyn Lesito (one of those murdered) as she had been on the verge of complaining to the Department of Labour regarding their long working hours, being unable to take leave and being underpaid.
Another worker, Maria Ntsoane, said they earned an average of R1080 a month and worked up to seven days a week. Night shift, they said, lasted 12 hours. "They tell you straight: 'If you don't want to work night shift, just take your bags and go,'" said.
If this is true it is yet another shocking example of the barbaric state of labour relations in South Africa. It illustrates clearly that workers need more, not less legal protection from abuse, exploitation and even murder, by employers who still think they live in the era of apartheid.
COSATU Gauteng demands a speedy trial and the severest possible sentences on those found guilty, as an example to all employers. COSATU members will continue to join those picketing the court to demand that justice be done.
