Limpopo Hiv/Aids Conference

24 - 04 - 06

COSATU, Treatment Action Campaign and the South African Council of Churches in Limpopo will tomorrow the 25th April 2005, hold a one day conference on HIV and AIDS to discuss the province's response to the pandemic. COSATU is of the view that there is a need to build stronger partnership with the civil society organisation and government to fight the pandemic as it has become necessary that all sectors must have shared responsibility in this struggle against HIV and AIDS.

Whilst we acknowledge the good strategies that have been put into place by government in this regard, we are of the view that not enough have been done to mobilise communities to take advantage of the government programme. Recently it has been widely reported that the number of infections have increased especially amongst the youth. The conference will therefore focus on amongst other on the following issues:

- The response towards HIV and AIDS in the province by the government and civil society.

- The state of public health in the Province

- The role of faith based organisation in the fight HIV and AIDS

- Development of an extensive programme of education and awareness that will reach out to vulnerable sections of our communities such as the youth and the farmworkers.

The conference will be held at EDUPARK in Polokwane from 9h00.

The MEC for Health and Social Welfare have been invited to address the conference.
