Swaziland border protest
The Congress of South African Trade Unions has been informed that police opened fire at the Matsamo border crossing with Swaziland and wounded several demonstrators. 20 people were arrested. More details will be made available as soon as we have them.
Meanwhile we can confirm that the following trade union officials were arrested at the Pongola crossing:
- Joe Nkosi, 1st Deputy President of COSATU
- Cedric Gina, 2nd Deputy President of NUMSA
- Michael Mashabela, National Treasurer of NEHAWU
- Zet Luzipo, KZN Provincial Secretary of COSATU
COSATU is appalled by the conduct of the police and will be taking this up with the utmost urgency with the government and SAPS leadership.
