Shabir Shaik

The Congress of South African Trade Unions notes that Schabir Shaik has been found guilty of three very serious charges of corruption and fraud. We also note that the Deputy President, Jacob Zuma, is implicated in some of the offences. He has not however been on trial nor charged and convicted of any offence, from a legal point of view. We cannot assume that anyone is guilty before he or she has been given the opportunity to defend him or herself. We are waiting to see if the parties intend to exercise their right to appeal against the verdict. COSATU will be studying the whole judgement and will be consulting its affiliated unions and giving them the opportunity to express their views and may issue a fuller statement after this consultation. Meanwhile Jacob Zuma remains the Deputy President.
