News and Publicity - Press Statement:

Condolences to SASCO

COSATU Communications Department - 1999-10-12

The Congress South African Trade Unions would like to convey its deep felt condolences to the family of comrade Wanga Sigila and the South African Students’ Congress – the organisation he served to his dying moment.

Sigila (SASCO’s Deputy President at the time of this death) passed away in a car accident on his way back from addressing the 8th anniversary celebration of SASCO at the University of the North West – Mafikeng.

Comrade Sigila’s death is not only a loss to SASCO and the student movement, but represents a tremendous loss for the democratic movement as a whole. Today we are one soldier poorer and the implications for the National Democratic Revolution are enormous.

COSATU calls on all South African Students to step up the fight for a just, equitable and non-racial education. It is only by doing so that the heroes and heroines of the student movement will not have died in vain.
