News and Publicity - Press Statement:
COSATU's 1st Vice President resigns
COSATU Communications Department - 1999-11-24
COSATU’s First Vice President, Peter Malepe, tendered his resignation to the federation’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) currently meeting in Johannesburg. The resignation was occasioned by unauthorised use of COSATU funds totaling R38 061.
The CEC accepted his resignation and further commended the National Office Bearers for detecting these financial irregularities at an early stage as well as the steps taken to recover the said funds.
Comrade Malepe has apologised to the leadership and membership of COSATU.
COSATU has repeatedly called for honesty and transparency in public and business affairs. The CEC thus resolved to make this public statement so that our members and the public know the facts surrounding the resignation.
The CEC will hold a by-election to replace comrade Peter Malepe and will announce the comrade’s name soon.
COSATU deems the matter to be closed and is satisfied with the procedures followed.
