COSATU Western Cape planning a one hour water protest at City Council on Sunday 21 January at 15:00

COSATU is deeply concerned that the sewerage of the rich is killing the poor people in Cape Town with disease, under the Mayor`s water plan. The city has not reversed from the drought levy rejected by all; they are just painting it a different colour and giving it a different name. This cost for the City miss management of the water crisis will be passed onto the citizens of Cape Town.


COSATU Western Cape calls on SAMWU to boycott Melissa Whitehead

COSATU is concerned to hear that Melissa Whitehead is still with the City administration. There are serious questions hanging over Melissa Whitehead in respect of the My City Buss corruption. There is also a historical problem of Whitehead and her bias towards the richer, mainly white Communities in respect of the roll out of the My City busses. This displays worrying signs of preferences driven by race, much like those under Apartheid.


COSATU strongly denounces and totally condemn the shooting of an NUM leader at Eastern Platinum Mine Lonmin

The Congress of South African Trade Unions condemns the shooting of the NUM branch chairperson of Eastern Platinum Mine at Lonmin unknown assailants in Bapong village near Brits. We send our message of solidarity to the family and wish them speedy recovery. The federation is also demanding that the SAPS set up a special Task team to investigate the violence in the mining sector.

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is deeply worried and concerned that a prominent NUM branch chairperson of Eastern Platinum Mine at Lonmin was shot tonight at around 7 pm by unknown people. It is alleged that he was shot with his wife at his house in Bapong village near Brits. They were both rushed to the hospital and the NUM is still waiting for further details about their condition in hospital.

SADTU Gauteng condemns racism at Hoerskool Overvaal

SADTU Gauteng condemns the brutal attack on peaceful demonstrators at Hoerskool Overvaal in Vereeniging. This justified demonstration follows a disappointing court judgement on Gauteng Department of Education`s to place 55 grade 8 learners. The assertion of lack of capacity to accommodate these learners is used to block transformation and keep the school as the sole preserve for White Afrikaners.


SADTU leaders to attend memorial service of slain teacher

The leadership of the South African Democratic Teachers` Union (SADTU) will today attend the memorial service of Bosele Middle School teacher Kingston Vhiya who was stabbed to death by a learner on Saturday night at his home in Manyeding Village near Kuruman, Northern Cape.
