The South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) and its membership across the length and breadth of this country oppose the unwise increase being demanded by Eskom, 16% a year over the next five years.
We are making a clarion call to all progressive forces to rise in opposition to the daylight robbery Eskom is attempting.
Contrary to what Eskom has said, there are alternatives that can and must be explored, to fund Eskom and its infrastructures spend.
It is also ill-advised of Government to continue to allow parastatals to shift the rising cost of services to the poor masses.
The poor cannot afford any more increases, these increases have a devastating impact on the lives of the working class and poor. The bulk of Municipal Workers for an example who already earn below market related salaries, will now have to pay more for transport, food, services and electricity. It is just not possible.
More than industrial strike action, Irresponsible increases in basic services will cause mass instability in the country and put undue pressure on the economy.
We call on our Federation Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) to lead a campaign against Eskom - similar to the highly successful mass action we led against the e-tolls. COSATU and its Unions must ensure that it forces Government to immediately halt the unaffordable increases Eskom is demanding. A high level task team must be set up as soon as possible, which must include senior Government officials, politicians and civil society to discuss alternate forms of funding.
