COSATU is holding its 6th National Congress from 16-19 September at the World Trade Centre, Johannesburg. The Congress comes half way between the previous congress and the next democratic elections. This poses additional challenges to COSATU, since we have to take stock of the intervening years and their impact on the organisation, as well as to prepare ourselves for the next century. The Federation also faces the ongoing challenges of political and social transformation and of the need to define its role in a democratic South Africa.

There are many other challenges currently facing the federation - the key ones being the need to ensure a strong and viable organisation, and to struggle for a worker-friendly macro economic framework. COSATU will have to develop effective strategies both to strengthen the Alliance and to retain a signficant influence on government, particularly around policy formulation. We intend to remain a strong force and a centre for transformation in our country. We are committed to the defence and advancement of issues affecting the working class.

It is for these reasons that the theme of the Congress - Defend, Consolidate and Advance Social Transformation - will play a key role in guiding the debates and resolutions of Congress.
