COSATU is embarking on a campaign to recruit more workers to our unions - this includes you! This is one of our biggest campaigns since the Living Wage campaign of the 80's. It is your chance to join millions of other workers who are shaping the transformation of our country and the workplace!
In line with the 6th National Congress resolution, the focus is on all of you who are either unorganised or disorganised. Some of you are in the informal and agricultural sectors where employers continue to deny you the rights granted to you by the constitution.
Despite membership growth in COSATU's public service unions, some of you particularly those who have just joined the public service, still remain outside of the only progressive trade union in our country. The same goes for white workers and white collar workers.
Let us together destroy the division of the past and build a powerful COSATU as a home for all South African workers!
COSATU has played a major role, not only in ending apartheid in our country, but also in improving the day to day lives of workers in South Africa. We pledge to continue to campaign for the democratisation of the economy and the work place so that all workers -black and white, skilled and unskilled, men and women - can enjoy the fruits of their labour.
We have campaigned against VAT increases and interest rate hikes, played a major role in the RDP processes and, together with the ANC and the SACP, we have secured new rights in the constitution, the Bill of Rights, the Labour Relations Act and the Basic Conditions of Employment Act.
And then of course there are COSATU's current struggles around job security, job losses, job creation, Skills Development and Employment Equity Bills. For many years, the public sector served the interest of a few. The time has now come for it to be transformed to serve the interest of all South Africans. We want to take our rightful place in that process. Public sector workers can make the task of transforming the sector easier by joining a COSATU trade union.
On other issues such as salaries, benefits, maternity leave and working hours, COSATU continues to fight for your rights!
